Calcium Modified Zinc Phosphate

Phosphate is a chemical conversion coating, not a plated metal layer — a phosphoric acid reaction transforms the surface of the part itself into a microcrystalline phosphate matrix that's chemically bonded to the substrate underneath.

CMC runs Calcium Modified Zinc Phosphate specifically: a thin, smooth, microcrystalline coating that delivers mild corrosion protection and an excellent base for paint, adhesives, or break-in applications. It's a non-toxic, non-hazardous alternative to traditional heavy phosphate coatings, which makes it the preferred choice for rubber-to-metal bonding and a clean upgrade from older phosphate chemistries.

Traditional heavy zinc and manganese phosphate coatings have served the industry for decades, but they bring a heavier weight, a heavier hazard profile, and a coarser crystal structure than many modern programs want. Calcium addition to the zinc phosphate bath refines the crystal structure, producing a finer, smoother, microcrystalline layer that performs in lighter weight than traditional phosphate while remaining fully compatible with paint, adhesive, and rubber-bonding chemistries.

The lighter coating weight also means better dimensional control for parts where the phosphate sits between mating surfaces, and a cleaner end-of-life environmental profile for customers managing RoHS, REACH, and end-of-life vehicle directives across their supply chain.

Calcium Modified Zinc Phosphate is specified across three main application categories: as a wear-resistant break-in surface, as a primer for paints and adhesives, and as the bonded surface in rubber-to-metal assemblies.

Post-Treatment

Sealers, Topcoats, and Forming Lubricants

The microcrystalline phosphate matrix is highly absorptive, which makes it an exceptional carrier for sealers, oils, lubricants, and topcoats. Each post-treatment shifts the finish to a different end-use:

Oil or sealer topcoats extend the phosphate's mild corrosion protection significantly, holding lubricant in the crystal structure where it provides ongoing protection over the part's service life. Lubricant topcoats tuned for cold forming, drawing, or extrusion let phosphated blanks move through forming dies without galling or pickup. Paint and adhesive systems bond mechanically into the phosphate crystals, producing bond integrity that bare-steel pre-treatments can't match.
